Comm Errors

The MicroScan software indicates comms errors in the Station Status window, and in the Station Log.

The following are examples of error numbers.

0001 Receive Queue Overflow.
Too much data has arrived at the COM port for the COM port to process it.
0002 Overrun Error.
This error is not an error with the data loop, but it indicates that the computer is not able to keep up with the data coming. It indicates the computer is too busy to receive comms data properly, or is too slow to receive data.

Check what screen saver is being used. Select a simpler screen saver. Screen Savers such as Open GL can cause this type of error. It has also been seen on Windows Me, the error started occurring after three days of operation from last power up.

If the computer is getting a bit slow to run MicroScan, this message will appear intermittently when the user is moving or resizing windows or performing other actions within MicroScan. In this case it is a non fatal message, as MicroScan will retry the message and carry on.
0004 Parity Error.
The Parity Bit of the data characters does not match.
See Note 1.
0008 Framing Error.
The framing of the data is not correct.
See Note 1.
000C Parity & Framing Error together.
See Note 1.
0010 Break Error.
A Break signal has been detected.
See Note 1.
0018 Framing & Break Error together.
See Note 1.
001C Framing, Parity & Break Error together.
See Note 1.
0100 Com Port TX Buffer Full.
The COM port has locked up, and is no longer sending data.
MicroScan software closes the port and opens it again.
This can indicate a COM port failure or a compatibility problem with the port and MicroScan using the port.

Tests with other software programs may verify the COM port is operational, but the MicroScan will not work properly with it. The error will appear intermittently over periods of time.

Try another COM port on the computer or install a USB serial port.
This message will also show Port Reset Messages in the Recorder Station Status Window.

Mains voltages are present on the outstations.
Wiring and cabling should only be checked and installed by suitably qualified persons.

Note 1:
These Errors can occur for the following reasons:

1. The data loop has been wired with the incorrect cable (a low capacitance cable must be used on ALL parts on the data loop)
2. Noise from other electrical devices is interfering with the comms signals on the data loop.
3. Poor connections at an outstation are affecting the signals on the data loop. Check the wires are seated correctly at the terminals by pulling them gently with long nosed pliers.
4. A station is going faulty (could be IN2000-XX station, these had a known fault on the bridge rectifier in the comms power supply on the units).

Check the Station Diagnostics page, to help diagnose problems with communications.
Please contact your integrator to aid in diagnosing these faults.
