Software Registration

The software registration locks the MicroScans purchased modules to the users computer or Version 5 dongle (if supplied).

Registration is required when the software is operated in End User mode to allow the purchased modules to operate. It is not needed when using the software in Agent mode to support End Users software.

You use the Register Software Wizard to register the software.

The software will operate normally for 2 weeks without registration, allowing sufficient time for the software to be registered.

To Register the software, click Register Software on the Setup Tools Screen or click Register Now on the Register Reminder Startup Screen.

What happens when the two week time limit expires ?

When the software is installed and first runs, the two week time period starts. After 2 weeks expires, the software will still operate normally (the data will be scanned and stored, and alarms will still operate), however the main displays will not be available and a message will be shown that the trial time period has expired. You should register you software to resume normal operation of it. If you uninstall and reinstall the software on the same computer, the trial time period will still be indicated as expired. You should not make adjustments to the trial period with the computers clock as doing so will decrease the size of the trial period.

Once the trial has expired can it be restarted ?

No. The trial time period cannot be restarted again after it has expired. The Register Software Wizard is used to register your software after the correct modules have been purchased to allow use of your software. Only under special circumstances can a unique file be sent to you which will allow another 2 week trial of the software on the same computer.

Can I use the software without registering it ?

You can use the software normally for up to two weeks without registration.
If you wish to use the software to support End Users, you can use the Select Module Wizard to select the Agent mode which allows the software to run online for 4 hours at a time, or the Demo mode which allows unlimited use of the software with Demo values.

Payment Protect Licence

You may have been supplied a payment protect licence which is a further time limited licence. You may use the software until the licence expires, when the software must be registered again. After the payment protect licence has expired, it cannot be replaced with another payment protect licence unless the licence has been wiped by a special file from your MicroScan supplier.

Emailing Registration Files

Using email is the only method to register the software. It is not possible to do registration via telephone or mobile telephone text messaging. You do not need to have email installed on the MicroScan computer, as you can email reg.txt and receive lic.txt and transfer them to the End Users computer via floppy, flash disk or network drive.

How do I view what modules are registered ?

You can see the registered modules on the Status bar at the bottom of the Setup Tools screen.

Why is the Register Software link not visible on the Setup Tools screen ?

This link is only visible when the software is in the End User mode, as this is the only mode that requires the software to be registered. This is also hidden if the software is a Network Passive. The Select Module Wizard is used to select the mode the software operates in.

What is a Dongle ?

A Dongle is a hardware key attached to the parallel port or USB port of the computer. This is then used to lock the software to as an id number. If used, the dongle should always be attached to the computer when the software starts, and it is also checked while the software is running.

Why do I need to register the software if I am using a dongle ?

The dongle is used purely as an ID number to lock the software to. Unlike the Version 4 dongle, it holds no module information. If you have purchased the software with a CD and dongle, the licence file to match your dongle will be found on the CD.

Can I use the licence file for one dongle with another dongle ?

No. The licence file is keyed to each dongle, as each dongle has a unique ID code to lock the software to. So the two items, the licence file and dongle must be treated as a matching pair.

Can I use the Version 4 dongle with Version 5 ?

The version 4 dongle is not supported under version 5.

Can I use my Version 4 Lite Registration codes with Version 5 ?

Version 5 does not support the use of the Version 4 Lite 16, Lite 32 software registration methods. You use the Register Software Wizard to register the Version 5 software.

Can I use my Version 4.1 software unlock file with Version 5 ?

Version 5 will not operate with a Version 4.1 unlock file. If you try to load it you will be warned with a message that the licence file is not supported.

How do I transfer the licence when using a dongle ?

When a job backup is made, the current licence file in use is copied to My Job Name\Setup folder.
This file is not restored automatically when the job is restored on another computer.

To transfer the licence:

  1. On the old machine, do a Tools Backup.
  2. On the new machine, install the MicroScan software and do a Tools Restore to load the job in.
  3. Attach the Dongle to the new computer.
  4. Use Register Software, browse to and load the licence file from the jobs setup folder, called "lic.txt"

Does the software need to be registered on each MicroScan Network Passive ?

The software does not need to be registered for each network passive. Instead a number of passives is registered on the Active, and this controls how many MicroScan passives can be used. The Register Software link on the Setup Tools screen will be hidden on Network Passive Only software.
